5 on: Race in Boston

On Thursday night, Boston’s President and CEO Sylvia Ferrell-Jones participated in WCVB’s “5 on 5: Race in Boston” live town hall broadcast. The event was presented in partnership with The Boston Foundation, and moderated by WCVB anchors Ed Harding and Maria Stephanos, and WCVB’s Director of Public Affairs/Host of CityLine Karen Holmes Ward. Panelists included:

  • Founder “Breakfast IV Brothers,” John Borders IV
  • The Boston Foundation President and CEO, Paul Grogan
  • Director of the Racial Justice Program at American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts, Rahsaan Hall
  • Attorney and President of the Boston Branch of the NAACP, Michael Curry
  • Executive Director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Economic Justice, Iván Espinoza-Madrigal
  • Member, “We Are the Ones,” Michelle Montolio
  • Chief of Economic Development, City of Boston, John Barros, 
  • Black Lives Matter, Daunasia Yancy

Boston Police Commissioner William Evans and Chief Resilience Officer for the City of Boston, Dr. S. Atyia Martin were invited panelists but were unable to attend. The panelists’ focus was: “The role everyone can play in making sure our community avoids the tragedies of Saint Paul, Baton Rouge, Ferguson, Baltimore, Dallas and the growing list of American cities.” The conversation aired live after a national ABC News special featuring President Barack Obama discussing the same topics. 

Ferrell-Jones spoke from the audience about YW Boston’s Dialogues on Race and Ethnicity and the fact that white people have options regarding talking about race, while people of color do not. Her appearance is at the 51:27 mark in the video.
