Beth Chandler, President & CEO, interviewed about renewed Parity on Board efforts
Beth Chandler, YW Boston’s President & CEO, joined GBH’s show Greater Boston on February 22, 2021 for the discussion “Renewed Effort To Require Gender & Racial Parity On Public Boards In Mass.” Beth and State Representative Patricia Haddad were interviewed by Host of Greater Boston, Jim Braude.
They discussed efforts to diversify Massachusetts’ public boards and commissions, led by YW Boston’s Parity on Board Coalition. Representative Haddad recently sponsored legislation which the coalition supports, An Act to Ensure Gender Parity and Racial and Ethnic Diversity on Public Boards and Commissions (S.521/H.2082). The proposed legislation would promote diversity in leadership and governance that broadly reflects the demographics of our Commonwealth.
As Beth explained, “The reason this matters is because our country was founded on representation and these boards and commissions make significant decisions and impact everybody in the Commonwealth. Yet, they are not represented” by people who identify as women, particularly women of color. Watch the full segment, below.

About YW Boston
As the first YWCA in the nation, YW Boston has been at the forefront of advancing equity for over 150 years. Through our DE&I services—InclusionBoston and LeadBoston—as well as our advocacy work and F.Y.R.E. Initiative, we help individuals and organizations change policies, practices, attitudes, and behaviors with a goal of creating more inclusive environments where women, people of color, and especially women of color can succeed.
As part of that work, we are helping organizations prioritize Diversity, Equity & Inclusion and become socially connected while staying physically distant. During this time, YW Boston is providing organizations with digital workshops and resources to help them better understand the challenges faced by their employees.
