YW Boston President and CEO Beth Chandler’s interview with New England Cable News aired on October 10, 2018. Beth went on NECN to talk with Sue O’Connell about YW Boston’s redefined focus and how the organization is working towards eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.

O’Connell went on to ask Beth why the organization started to refer to itself as YW Boston instead of YWCA Boston to which Beth replied: “We decided about 8 years ago to use YW Boston because people thought we only worked with Christians. The challenge is that we work with all genders and so the ‘W’ confuses people as well. Our programs are for all genders, all races, all ethnicities, all people.”

Beth also went on to explain how YW Boston’s LeadBoston program is equipping leaders in the city with competencies that can allow them to impact their community in a socially responsible way. After spending a day in the House of Corrections with the LeadBoston class, one LeadBoston alumna and employee of one of the city’s utility companies initiated a program that would train and later provide employment within the organization to individuals in the correctional system.
