On Tuesday, September 25, 2018, YW Boston President and CEO Beth Chandler participated in the Boston Bar Association’s Spotlight on Race in Boston: What the Experts Suggest. This panel intended to continue the important conversation about racism in Boston, as chronicled in the recent Boston Globe Spotlight seven-part series, “Boston. Racism. Image. Reality.”

The event featured Meghan Irons, the Boston Globe’s Social Justice/Race reporter, who led a conversation with representatives from multiple Boston-based organizations dedicated to helping others better understand and address the systemic challenges facing the Boston-area legal community when it comes to issues of diversity and inclusion.

Panelists included Carol Fulp (The Partnership, Inc.), Beth Chandler (YW Boston), Marguerite A. Fletcher (Fletcher Consulting LLC and LeadBoston alumna), and Su Joun (Diversity@Workplace Consulting Group).

This event was free and open to the public. Audience members enjoyed a moderated discussion before having the opportunity to interact with the panelists in smaller breakout sessions. A networking reception followed a concluding question-and-answer session. During their discussions, the experts addressed questions from the audience on how to approach clients who just want to “tick boxes” when it comes to diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts within their organization as well as how to frame conversations in order to get leadership members to “buy-in”.

If you were unable to attend and would like to hear more expert strategies on DE&I– including insights from Sara Prince, co-author of McKinsey’s “Diversity Matters” report– consider attending our 2018 Elevating Lives Series. This two-day event will focus on issues impacting Boston hiring and retention practices at the intersection of race and gender.
